The Problem
As each year passes, a new report is published concluding that the worlds corals reefs are under serious threat and that these important ecosystems have yet again decreased in size. Like the rain forests, coral reefs have been in existence for millions of years yet in the last few decades, these delicately balanced marine environments are rapidly dying due to human activity such as pollution, overfishing, land development, tourism, climate change to name just a few. The vast majority of marine animals sold to supply the marine aquarium hobby are taken from these very same coral reefs.
Part Of The Solution
After many years successfully encouraging hobbyists to propagate corals and breed marine fish, Reefs UK are pleased we have gone some way in raising the awareness on how important it is to propagate / frag the corals that have already been removed from the reefs. Producing several child corals from a single parent coral enables the hobby to supply several people with corals from existing imported coral stocks thus greatly reducing the impact on the worlds reefs. The same is true captive breeding marine fish. However, this is only part of the solution and we need to ensure all imported marine animals have been sourced in a truly sustainable and ethical process.
Time For Change
When buying marine animals, hobbyists still do not know how these animals have been collected. Reefs UK would like everyone to feel confident that when they are purchasing a live marine animal, they are guaranteed it has been collected from a sustainable source and that their purchase is helping developing countries receive an income caring for the reef rather than harming these delicate ecosystems. We therefore now believe it is time to change the way marine animals are imported. To find out more about our proposal and to learn how you can ensure the livestock you purchase does not impact the worlds reefs, please read through the resources on this website.
We all enjoy keeping and admiring the slice of coral reef we have in our homes but we also want to ensure the worlds coral reefs are in no way affected because of this hobby.
