Glossary

Community

Everyone who contributes to an Open Source project. This includes the developers, the sponsors, the testers, support members and obviously all the the people who use the end product.

Developers/Programmers

Someone who writes the actual code to produce a software application.

Information Technology (IT)

Any computer related equipment in use within a business. A businesses entire computer infrastructure.

Linux

A free open-source operating system based on Unix that runs on a variety of hardware platforms including x86 PCs, Alpha, PowerPC and IBM's product line.

Open Source Software (OSS)

Software source code that is available to the general public and does not have licensing restrictions that limit use, modification, or redistribution. The basis of open source software is to produce more useful and bug-free products for everyone to use.

Projects

The term project is used as a referral to a specific software application or community. For example, openSUSE is a Open Source Linux project. OpenOffice is another Open Source project.

Proprietary Commercial Software

Software which has been created by a single software company using its own standards and cannot be modified updated or changed in anyway.

Software Product

Actual software application e.g. word processor, spreadsheet application, database application. Also refer to Projects.
