Glossary

IT terminology can be somewhat confusing so here is a list of terms that have been used throughout this website.

Community

Everyone who contributes to an open source project. This includes large IT corporations, independent software developers, sponsors, application test users, support members and obviously all the people who use the end product.

Developers/Programmers

Someone who writes the actual code that produce software applications.

Information Technology (IT)

Any computer related equipment in use within an organisation from the data centre to the desktop PC.

Linux

A free open source operating system based on Unix that runs on a variety of hardware platforms including x86 PCs, Alpha, PowerPC and IBM's product line.

Free Open Source Software

Software source code that is available to the general public and does not have licensing restrictions that limit use, modification, or redistribution. The basis of open source software is to produce more useful and bug-free products for everyone to use.

Projects

The term project is used as a referral to a specific open source software application or community. For example, Ubuntu is an open source linux operating system project. OpenOffice is an open source office application project.

Proprietary Commercial Software

Software which has been created by a single software company using its own standards and cannot be modified updated or changed in anyway.

Software Product

Actual software application e.g. word processor, spreadsheet application, database application.

Take Life Easy

Because I believe organisations are working too hard for their IT systems and that they need to Take Life Easy and use open source software so their IT systems start to work for them!
